Fox Searchlight gears up for the April 8 release of Jake Gyllenhaal’s upcoming movie Demolition with a brand new trailer. Scroll down for all the details.
Jake Gyllenhaal has been on something of a hot streak with his recent performances. Going back to what made Donnie Darko so successful, he’s begun channelling his inner weirdo/sociopath/unstable individual with strong performances in Nightcrawler, Prisoners, Enemy and last year’s Southpaw. Judging by the new trailer for his latest movie Demolition, it seems as if he’s once again going back to that well.
The comedy/drama sees Gyllenhaal play a widower. His wife has died in a car accident and he can’t seem to feel anything towards the situation. He urges himself to grieve but it’s not just happening for him, as he tells the company responsible for a faulty vending machine in a complaint letter time and time again – I told you he was unstable.
When a concerned employee (Naomi Watts) of said company gets in touch with Gyllenhaal to see if he needs somebody to talk to – that’s when he gets the idea to take a sledgehammer to his marriage as he so aptly puts it.
The trailer paints a picture of the story very well. Gyllenhaal looks to be adding another superb performance to his growing list of credentials while it’s always great to see Naomi Watts get time to shine. However, I’m personally most excited about the inclusion of Chris Cooper. From American Beauty to Adaptation, he’s a proven a knack for playing subtly complex and engaging characters, wringing out realism and emotion from any given script. He takes on the role of the deceased’s father, and the few clips we see of him point to a clash of interests or morals with Gyllenhaal.
Demolition has been given an April 8 release date. Jean-Marc Vallée (Wild, Dallas Buyers Club) is on directing duties, working from a script by Bryan Sipe.
