Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Rita Repulsa in the new upcoming Power Rangers film. Scroll down for more details.
That’s right, self-proclaimed ‘goody two-shoes’ Elizabeth Banks has turned heel and been announced as the villain in the Hollywood reboot of the popular 90s kids TV show, Power Rangers.
Banks will play Rita Repulsa, building on her solid performances in the likes of The Hunger Games franchise and Pitch Perfect 2 – which she also directed and produced. If she can find a balance between those two performances, with the added theatricality and bite of their personalities, she might just steal the show.
The cast welcomes a host of fresh-faced actors to play the colourful young superheroes. They include: R.J. Cyler (who you may recognise from Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and Dacre Montgomery.
Of course, Rita wasn’t the only bad guy these butt-kicking teens went up against. If you can remember far back enough, you might recall her husband, Lord Zedd, the villainous Goldar and his expendable army of grunts, her brother Rito Revolto (original name right?), her father Master Vile, and the lead antagonist from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Ivan Ooze. While I doubt many more villains will crop up in this reboot alone, it might be entirely plausible that several of them make an appearance further down the line. Of course, that would only be the case if this movie proves to be a critical and financial success.
Project Almanac director Dean Israelite is set to helm the ship, along with producers Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, as well as executive producer Allison Shearmur.
Power Rangers is set to be released March 24 2017.
