Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Riz Ahmed sits down to talk about what we can expect in the upcoming sci-fi spin-off. Scroll down for all the details.
Now the smoke has FINALLY cleared after J.J. Abrams’ monumentally successful Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we can start to look forward to Gareth Edwards’ rebel based spin-off, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Little is known about the plot or characters as of yet, but star Riz Ahmed – who’s most notable role to date was in Nightcrawler – has promised a wholly different and grittier Star Wars movie to the rest of multi-billion dollar franchise. While he doesn’t reveal any details about the story or who he’ll be playing, he has let slip that, at it’s core, Rogue One will be a war movie.
We know already that the movie follows the rebels who braved Darth Vader’s imperial forces to steal the Death Star plans before the original movie, and it’s being touted as a sci-fi version of Spielberg’s epic Saving Private Ryan.
Ahmed recently spoke to HeyUGuys and had this to say about the movie:
“In a weird way, this hasn’t been like a machine. What Gareth Edwards is bringing to Rogue One is incredible, organic, loose, kind of a raw feeling. When Gareth speaks about Rogue One, he spoke about it in terms of a war movie. And he compares it to other War movies. What it will bring is a fresh pair of eyes on a familiar world. I think that is real exciting. We’re doing something a little different to the other films. And hopefully people are ready for that, and will embrace it.”
He also championed the diversity among the cast, mentioning how it is a true reflection of society as opposed to a reaction to any racial issues in Hollywood:
“It’s been really cool. Because Star Wars is such a touchstone for cinema. It really has been for decades. It’s really cool to see them leading the way for diversity. I wouldn’t even call it diversity. I would call it honesty, really. They’re lining their films with a sign of the times we’re living in. Felicity has the lead role in Rogue One. And you have Diego Luna, Donnie Yen and Wen Jiang in there as well. It’s really cool to see that franchise lead the way, and bring us into line with reality a little more.”
And who better to lead this varied and talented cast than 2014’s Godzilla director, Gareth Edwards. Ahmed had a few choice words on working with the man:
“He’s such a down to earth, relaxed, normal dude with a wicked sense of humor. He doesn’t bring any ego to the table. It’s not like a big boss on set. He puts everyone at ease. Lets everyone relax. He creates a working environment where everyone can have some input, everyone can bring something to the table. He brings out the best in everyone. So, hopefully some of it stuck. And I look forward to it.”
While all of these little snippets are exciting, we still know very little about what will transpire. There are rumours of a Boba Fett appearance, as well as the big bad Darth Vader showing up. In all honesty, it’s much more satisfying not knowing every little detail, but the suspense is painful. After all, we’ve still got nearly a year left to wait!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released on December 16, 2016.
