Jedi Master Yoda was so close to having a cameo in the new Star Wars, before producers decided against it. Scroll down for all the details.
Of all our favourite classic Star Wars characters that didn’t make the cut for The Force Awakens, Yoda has to be up there as being most disappointing cameo turn-down. The wise Jedi Master came closest of all the old characters to appearing in the latest adventure – barring the ones who were included obviously. However, only a small piece of dialogue was chosen for Rey’s flashback scene along with a couple of seconds of Obi Wan.
Unfortunately for Yoda fanatics, the rest of his scenes were cut. The plan was that he would appear as a Force ghost like in Return of the Jedi, but decided against it the filmmakers did – see what I did there?
That’s not to say they weren’t seriously considering Yoda’s involvement in the film. On the contrary they even had the one and only Frank Oz – Yoda’s puppeteer from the originals – come in and work with them for a day. Editors of The Force Awakens Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey claimed:
There was one point where we were actually thinking of having Yoda in the film, and then we decided not to. Frank Oz came in for a day and did a whole bunch of Yoda and he was over the moon to do it — and we were tickled pink!
Just because the lovable green Jedi only had a few words of dialogue in the latest film, doesn’t mean to say he won’t have a far bigger role in the upcoming additions to the Star Wars franchise. Will he be heavily involved in the big finale of this new trilogy, when the dark side and the light no doubt come to an epic climax? Or perhaps (and here’s hoping) we’ll see that Yoda spin-off movie we’ve been waiting for?
