A24 have released the latest trailer for their period horror The Witch, proving that peek-a-boo is one scary game to play. Scroll down for all the details.
Of all the horror films that have come out or are due to come out in 2016, none quite have the buzz or expectation around them as Robert Eggers’ debut feature The Witch. The movie stunned audiences at Sundance, proving to be the breakout smash from the festival. That notoriety has created a rumbling in the horror movie world, an occurrence that is only heightened as each new trailer is released.
The first two trailers were stone cold tension-builders which focused on offering smartly edited shots that never really gave anything away as well as teasing some truly harrowing imagery – namely splatterings of blood and the family’s black goat rearing onto its hind legs. Each time, we were promised witchcraft without ever getting a sense of who or what the evil doer is or what her plan consists of – although you’d be wise to guess it has something to do with stealing babies.
This latest teaser focuses on newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy – who seems to be the relatable one in this historical family of outcasts – who plays peek-a-boo with her baby sibling. The whole thing is very reminiscent of The Conjuring’s terrifying trailer (clap, clap!), you can tell what is going to happen, but the revelation still hits you with the right kind of chill for this type of movie.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve been mightily impressed with the marketing campaign for The Witch so far. The filmmakers have created just the right amount of intrigue for casual movie fans while building on all the Sundance hype. In all honesty, this looks like the kind of film we all wanted The Village to turn out to be, but the less said about that the better.
The story doesn’t seem overly complex, the imagery is affecting and visceral and the trailers alone have me shaking in my boots.
The Witch will be released on February 19, 2016 in the USA, while we Brits have to wait until March 11.
