Over a month after the release of smash-hit sequel Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, fans have been clamoring for the chance to own their own copy of the seventh film in the franchise, and with good reason. After the refreshing (if formulaic) return of the series, many including myself are eager to see it again from the comfort of our own homes, if only to catch up on whatever Easter eggs we may have missed and thumb through however-many hours of additional content.
Well, we may have confirmation on when we’ll be able to jump to lightspeed. Amazon have published the Blu-Ray page on their website, and for a brief moment, a potential release date appeared in the product information. That date is April 5th – just over two months from now!
If it is true, then it means the digital edition – typically released some time before the physical copy – might even drop earlier, should the date hold up.
Before you enter hyperspace, however, listen up. Since the information has been retracted and replaced with the usual “to be announced” label, it’s entirely possible that this date was an estimated placeholder, and the actual release may be significantly sooner or, more likely, later than previously indicated. That being said, an April release date seems very likely, and there will no doubt be some form of official confirmation within the next month or two.
Despite this uncertainty, fans such as myself are excited to get our hands on this fleshed-out edition. While we aren’t sure about the depth and breadth of the features included (no word yet on a monochrome, music-only version a la Mad Max: Fury Road), a high-quality picture and a wealth of deleted scenes, commentaries and interviews are sure to keep even the most avaricious of fans entertained when it finally enters the Hoth system– I mean, stores near you.
The Blu-Ray pre-order is currently priced at £15.99, while the digital pre-order is as low as £9.99 for standard definition. The JJ Abrams film has already accrued close to two billion dollars in worldwide box office revenue.
Any speculation on the location of the hidden Rebel base– I mean, the actual release date? Tell us in the comments below!
