Have you ever wondered how much of what you see in films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is real and how much is computer effects? Well the good guys over at Industrial Lights and Magic have let FXGuide in on the secret and revealed some amazing behind-the-scenes shots to show exactly how the magicked up the visuals in the latest return to the Star Wars universe. VFX supervisor, Roger Guyett, had this to say in the interview:
The technology that’s available to you is just mind-blowing, really, even for me. I work in this business and I’m shocked at how much we were able to just blur the line between the reality of shooting something and the stuff that we [added] later.
A second video has also been released via the Wired YouTube channel, which goes into great detail about how they created Maz Kenata (12 Years a Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o) as well as discussing the innovative ‘Medusa’ capture technology utilised that helped bring her character to life.
While they say a magician should never reveal his tricks, I for one relish these little tidbits. Sure the world of Star Wars is utterly mind-blowing when it’s up there on the big screen, but seeing the work that goes into making it all a reality is something else entirely. Watching these guys do what they do is an absolute treat, that’s coming from a guy who barely knows how to put an image into PowerPoint!
