7. Watchmen (Zack Snyder, 2009)
While many said this movie was “unfilmable”, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen does a solid job at balancing the smorgasbord of edgy superhero types with the overly ambitious, albeit sometimes convoluted plot. Set during the height of the Cold War, a team of former masked vigilantes uncover a plot to kill others of their ilk while attempting to bring about a violent and major shift in world politics.
The movie can get very daunting at times and Jackie Earle Haley knocks it out of the park as the completely incorruptible Rorschach. It’s a dark and brooding affair with one unavoidable talking point that takes the R rating all by itself: Dr Manhattan’s dangling blue neon manhood.
