4. Dredd (Pete Travis, 2012)
If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember the travesty that was Sylvester Stallone’s 90’s comic book effort, Judge Dredd. Lucky for us, Ex Machina helmer Alex Garland got his hands on the source material and turned out a much more proficient and gloriously bloodthirsty tale.
Star Trek’s Karl Urban stars as the futuristic cop who finds himself locked into an enormous apartment block with a seemingly endless gang of drug pushers and nothing but a rookie for backup. Think of it as a mercilessly gory sci-fi version of The Raid, complete with all the and brutal hand-to-hand combat you’d expect from a bad-ass, devil-may-care law enforcer.
